What is the Canada Disability Benefit?

The Canada Disability Benefit is a direct monthly payment designed to lift working-age persons with disabilities out of poverty. It was created to supplement, not replace, existing provincial and territorial disability supports. The federal government has recognized that millions of Canadians with disabilities face significant financial hardship, and the CDB is a direct response to this crisis.

The program is administered by Service Canada. First eligibility month is June 2025, with payments beginning in July 2025.

"The Canada Disability Benefit provides direct financial support to people with disabilities who are between 18 and 64 years old."

— Government of Canada, Canada.ca

Important Note

The CDB benefit amount is income-tested and may be reduced based on your net income and the net income of your spouse or common-law partner. The maximum benefit is approximately $200/month for individuals with the lowest incomes.

Eligibility

Who Qualifies for the Canada Disability Benefit?

Eligibility for the CDB is tied directly to the Disability Tax Credit (DTC). This is the most critical factor to understand. To qualify, you must meet all of the following criteria:

Approved for the Disability Tax Credit (DTC)

This is non-negotiable. DTC approval is the gateway to the CDB. If you are not yet approved, this is your first and most important step.

Between 18 and 64 years old

The CDB is designed for working-age Canadians with disabilities. Seniors 65 and older have access to other federal supports.

Filed your 2024 income tax return

Service Canada uses your tax return to determine your benefit amount. Filing on time ensures you receive the full benefit you are entitled to.

Canadian resident for tax purposes

You must be a resident of Canada for income tax purposes in the month you are applying for the benefit.

Not yet approved for the DTC?

If you have not yet been approved for the DTC, that is your first and most important step. My Benefits Canada specializes in helping Canadians successfully navigate the DTC application process.

How the CDB and DTC Work Together

It is essential to understand the relationship between these two programs. Think of it this way: The DTC is the key that unlocks the door to the CDB. Without DTC approval, the door to the CDB remains closed.

ProgramTypePurpose
Disability Tax Credit (DTC)Non-refundable tax creditReduces the amount of income tax you owe. It is the gateway to other disability programs.

This is why a successful DTC application is the foundation of your entire disability benefits strategy. The DTC also unlocks the Child Disability Benefit and eligibility for the Registered Disability Savings Plan (RDSP).
