Eligibility Overview

Could You Qualify for the DTC?

CRA evaluates functional impact, not diagnosis alone. Here is what matters for Vision Loss.

What Qualifies

  • Visual acuity in both eyes is 20/200 (6/60) or worse on the Snellen Chart (or equivalent) even with the use of corrective lenses or medication.
  • The greatest diameter of the field of vision in both eyes is 20 degrees or less even with the use of corrective lenses or medication.
  • The impairment is 'prolonged,' meaning it has lasted or is expected to last for a continuous period of at least 12 months.
  • The restriction is present all or substantially all of the time (at least 90% of the time).
  • Eligibility may also be met through the 'cumulative effect' of vision loss combined with other significant impairments in daily living.

Up to $22,000

Common Questions

Vision Loss and the DTC — FAQ

What specific vision criteria does the CRA use for DTC eligibility?

The CRA considers you eligible if a medical practitioner certifies that your visual acuity is 20/200 or worse in your better eye with correction, or if your visual field is 20 degrees or less in your better eye. You may also qualify if the cumulative effect of vision loss and another impairment is equivalent to being markedly restricted in one category.

Can I apply for the DTC if I have vision loss in only one eye?

Generally, the CRA criteria specify that the impairment must affect 'both eyes' or the 'better eye' after correction. If you have perfect vision in one eye, you likely won't qualify under the vision category alone, though you might qualify under 'cumulative effects' if you have other health challenges.

How far back can I claim the Disability Tax Credit for vision loss?

If your vision loss was documented and met the CRA criteria in previous years, MBC can help you claim retroactive adjustments for up to the last 10 calendar years. This often results in a significant lump-sum refund for many of our clients.

How does My Benefits Canada help with the vision loss DTC application?

MBC provides a comprehensive service where we review your medical history, coordinate with your optometrist or ophthalmologist to ensure the T2201 form is completed accurately, and handle all correspondence with the CRA. We work on a contingency basis, meaning you only pay if your application is approved.
